Favorite Albums of 2016

I listen to a lot of music, but over the course of this year certain songs really stood out as “life-changing” or at least they did for the moments I found myself in these last 12 months. While my music taste is across the board, each record was equally blasted through my speakers in a calming way, in which I forgot the stress and the pain and connected happy experiences to the lyrics of these artists; creating a more cohesive me.

  131 (EMAROSA)

The band’s second album with lead singer Bradley Walden, creates a irresistible desire to feel any kind of pain, for no reason at all, other than the melodies are perfect.

Favorite songs on the record:

Sure      /     Blue      /     Hurt

Free 6LACK (6LACK)

6LACK (pronounced “black”) is an up and coming rapper from Atlanta. He’s 21 and amazing. I think I found him through recommendations on Youtube. His lyrics and beats are a refreshing addition to the music scene, so much so that I wouldn’t be surprised if he gains notoriety like Rae Sremmurd has.

Favorite songs on the record:

Loving U      /     Free

519814784 Your Eyez Only (J. Cole)

J. Cole is just one of my favorite rappers. Forest Hills Drive, his predecessor album, changed my music taste forever. Because of that album I got really interested in rapper language. On 4 Your Eyez Only, Cole once again created a story of loss and love, contributing to the evolution of original content and bringing poetry back to hip-hop.

Favorite songs on the record:

Deja Vu       /     Foldin Clothes

I first learned about Kehlani when I saw her perform at the MTV Woodies (SXSW 2016), from then on I was hooked. Kehlani was nominated for a Grammy last year for Best Urban Contemporary Album, however, it is her singles that have me wanting more. Kehlani’s music makes me feel pretty – sexy even because of her lyrics. In my opinion there are very few female artists that have that capability, it seems like most are trying to dominate the industry through a male-like persona.

Favorite songs:

                                                                                                     Distraction      /    Table    /    CRZY
